Yitong Xin, Ph.D.

Bio

I am an Assistant Professor at the College of Social Work, University of Utah, where I combine research, teaching, and mentorship to advance knowledge in mental health and substance use treatment. I earned my Ph.D. from The Ohio State University - proud to be a Buckeye!

My work focuses on clinical research at the intersection of mental health and substance use treatment, emphasizing harm reduction (e.g., psychedelic-assisted interventions) and strengths-based methodologies. Through my work, I aim to minimize the potential negative consequences while promoting resilience, empowerment, and overall well-being.

My overarching research interests span four themes: Substance Use, Harm Reduction, Trauma and Minority Stress, and Resilience. I have a particular interest in psychedelic-assisted interventions, which stems from my personal appreciation for nature and plants. Many psychedelics are plant-based medicines and have demonstrated therapeutic potential in mental health. I'm excited to combine this passion with my professional focus on supporting individuals in their recovery from mental and substance use disorders, exploring innovative and compassionate approaches to healing.

Life Beyond Academia

Outside of academia, I’m a licensed social worker and therapist who deeply values connection, empathy, and kindness.

Traveling has always been one of my biggest passions - I love exploring new places and dream of one day circling the globe. When I’m not working, you might find me skiing in the mountains, playing cello or piano, building Legos, watching the rain with a good book, spending time with my small zoo of pets (all lovingly named after fruits), or caring for my plants and working on my backyard garden. One day, I hope to retire on a peaceful little farm where I can grow things, drink tea in the sun, and play music for animals.

Nice to meet you!
